You might have heard of periodontal services before, but are still unsure precisely what they are. These services take care of the protective tissue that surrounds your teeth and hold them in place. Doing this helps keep the teeth from becoming infected, which might cause tooth loss and other problems.
As a prefix, “peri” means “around” or “surrounding. Thus, periodontal services are those that focus specifically on the gums and the tooth root. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in problems affecting those areas. Since many people ask about the difference between a periodontist and an endodontist, the latter focuses on the insides of teeth.
Our practice offers several periodontal maintenance services aimed at preventing gum and root problems, though. And if a periodontal issue ever becomes severe, we will refer you to a Houston area periodontist if you would like.

Prophylaxis is what many dental professionals call routine dental cleaning or preventative dental care. A dental hygienist will remove plaque and hardened deposits of tartar or calculus above the gum line to stop the mouth’s resident bacteria from causing cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.
Even the most thorough home brushing and flossing routine doesn’t necessarily remove all of these collected deposits. That’s why the hygienist needs to use special scaling tools to scrape them. Scraping is a painless process. However, the better care you give your teeth between dental visits, the less scraping will be required.
Patients with no pre-existing mouth illness or damage should schedule routine dental prophylaxis two times annually. Our staff are always happy to set up those appointments for you at the end of your current visit.
Debridement of the mouth involves the removal of dead, damaged, or infected tissue surrounding the teeth and covering the jaw bone. Doing this increases the healing potential of the healthy tissue that remains.
We do full-mouth debridement most commonly on those who haven’t had a good dental cleaning (prophylaxis) in a long time. Not only do these folks have hardened tartar at the gum line, but they have it on and between their teeth and below the gum line. It’s common to use an ultrasonic device combined with scaling tools to remove what has accumulated.
If you haven’t had your teeth professionally cleaned for a while and you’re considering some type of cosmetic dentistry, a full-mouth debridement is a great way to prepare your mouth for the process. Having a clean and tartar-free mouth will help prevent any post-procedural infection that might occur with a cosmetic dentistry procedure.
What’s more, the debridement process prepares your teeth for the dentist to get a good look at them during your regular dental examination. If full-mouth debridement has been recommended for you, you should breathe a sigh of relief when it’s finished. It will leave your mouth feeling cleaner and healthier than it has in a long time!
Periodontal maintenance is a routine and necessary cleaning with a particular emphasis on the areas below the gum line. This cleaning is meant for patients who have had previous periodontal treatment. Our maintenance treatments preserve and retain the gum pockets and keep any bone loss from progressing.
Once a patient has had periodontal disease, the bone is more susceptible to bacteria and requires a more frequent and detailed cleaning schedule, usually once every three months. That way, we can make sure the disease has not returned or progressed. And if it has, we’ll begin treatment right away.
Since Memorial Dentists specializes in periodontal services, consider us among the best dentists to see for your regular maintenance appointments.
At Memorial Dentists, we happily accept cash or credit card payments for our dental services. Our staff is also prepared to file payment claims with your insurance company.
Although you are ultimately the one responsible for the terms of your policy or how your claims are handled, we can help by completing and submitting the paperwork for you.
