National smile day

Did you know there’s a day where you can celebrate that pearly smile of yours?

Not many people know, but June 15th is National Smile Day and there are ways you can celebrate it!

Not sure what it is or how to celebrate it? Let’s give you a few ideas!

What Is National Smile Day?

Humans smile at least 40-50 times a day

Why do we smile? We smile to exuberate emotion, power, and joy. Sometimes we smile as we cry, or we smile as we laugh.

This form of expressing emotion is something that not everybody realizes is so important.

So, National Smile Day in 2021 gives us a time to remember smiling. Especially in a time when the world has been so affected by COVID-19.

While nobody knows who created this special day, the creator must have understood and known the importance of a smile. Whether that means he struggled with sadness and smiling, or maybe he was your average comedian that smiled all day long.

Humans are the only beings in the world that actually and thoughtfully smile. While some animals can express a form of a smile, they don’t really understand the meaning and depth behind it. Most of the time they don’t even realize they are doing it.

Humans can understand the power of smiling and are able to even do it on command.

If a smile is something precious, then it deserves to be celebrated.

Why Is It Important To Celebrate?

Smiling has all kinds of benefits that should be celebrated!

For a few, it lowers your blood pressure because it releases hormones.  Furthermore, it even relieves you of stress because it’ll release tension in your body.

Many people in the world struggle to smile when they are battling illnesses like depression and anxiety. This gives them a day to think about how they can smile and the reasons to smile.

There are thousands of people who are born with smile-affecting facial deformities. Disorders like moebius syndrome affect people from making facial expressions. These people are unable to have a smile until they get the resources they need. Sometimes they won’t have resources at all to help it.

This gives us a day to recognize how grateful we can be for smiling when others are unable to, and how to spread that happiness to others.

So don’t be afraid to smile; enjoy it.

How Can I Support National Smile Day?

Think to yourself; how much do I smile? How much do I appreciate my smile and the smile of others?

You can support National Smile Day by smiling brighter yourself and encouraging others to do the same.

Society has contorted the act of smiling towards something you have to do, even when you don’t really mean it. They have tweaked it to believe that smiling is just something you do in order to do it and not that it’s something special and powerful.

Smiles have power beyond any other emotion. If a smile has such power, then we should be using it and thinking on how we can make others smile too.

Don’t take your smile for granted. Use it and embrace its power.

What if Smiling Is Hard For Me?

Maybe life is difficult and it’s hard for you to smile right now. Maybe you don’t like your smile and feel insecure about it.

Here are some things you can do.

Think on the Blessings You Have

No matter what area or time in life we are at, we always have a reason to be thankful. Whether it’s the breath we have to live, a friend always by our side or the warming sunshine in the sky. There’s always something you can choose to be grateful for and smile in return.

Here are 5 easy things you can think about to be grateful for:

  1. Sunshine
  2. Ability to see, speak, or hear
  3. Ways to communicate to others
  4. Friends or family
  5. Your smile

Embrace Your Smile

Sometimes we can find it hard to be thankful for our smile if we don’t like it. The truth is, each smile in this world is unique and special to each person.

You will never be able to see how you look through the eyes of another person ever in your entire life. If you can’t see what you look like through another’s eyes, how do you know what other people see when you smile?

For all you know, someone else can see your smile and smile because of it. Someone can look at your smile and think it’s the most beautiful thing in the world.

We will never quite fully understand how other people view us vs. how we view ourselves. Because of this, we can embrace who we are, smile brightly, and be confident in how we look.

What’s the Challenge?

Maybe smiling is normal for you. Or maybe you just need to challenge yourself more. Here’s how you can challenge yourself on National Smile Day:

Wake up in the morning and smile at yourself in the mirror. Let yourself love who you were born to be and the smile you were given.

Find different ways throughout the holiday that you can brighten someone else’s day by giving a smile.

Focus on acts of kindness and having a positive attitude, even in the darker moments.

Lastly, choose to smile and think on the reasons you have to smile. Be thankful; use the power of smiling.
